Are Iodine Supplements Critical for Your Health?

Dear Friend,

Welcome to my website on the subject of iodine and iodine supplements! Here you’ll find some useful information on iodine and your health.

You will understand how iodine plays a major role in maintaining your general state of health, as well as its role in preventing various types of cancer, such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. Iodine supplements can also reduce your risk of uptake of radioactive iodine that may be present in the environment.

My belief is that most of the population today has insufficient iodine in their body and in their diet. Iodine insufficiency has become a problem. Personally I have been taking Iodoral iodine supplements for quite some time to protect my own state of health.

If you spend a little time on my site you will find a number of articles, videos, and Q & A’s to help you learn more about the subject iodine and iodine supplements. There is also information on Iodoral iodine supplements, and also of the other popular brand Lugol.

There is a wealth of information here for you which is updated very regularly.

In determining for yourself whether iodine supplements are necessary, it is important to understand that iodine has a number of very important functions in your body. It is taken up by the thyroid gland and used to make hormones. The thyroid gland produces two important hormones – Thyroxine (also known as T4) and Triiodothyronine (also known as T3). Thyroxine is around 80% of the thyroid’s hormone output, and Triiodothyronine is the remaining 20%.

Thyroxine has major influence over your physical development and your metabolic processes. Triiodothyronine is more potent than T4 and has an effect on overall growth and development, rate, body temperature, and metabolism.

Apart from the thyroid most of your tissues and glands also need iodine to support proper functioning. This includes salivary glands, gonads – prostate and ovaries, mammary glands, the lining of the stomach, and the thymus. Iodine also has antioxidant properties and can help in controlling free radicals thereby supporting your immune system. In this regard it also plays a key role in controlling auto-immune problems.

In terms of cancer support, iodine plays an important role of destroying cells that may have become cancerous. Apart from all that iodine has the ability to rid the body of many toxins such as fluoride, chloride, bromide, and heavy metals such as mercury and lead.

So you can now begin to understand why iodine is so critical for your health, and why iodine supplements should be considered.

Iodine Supplements and General Health

Iodine supplements in those who have an insufficient level of iodine can indeed support your general health. Iodine is not just important for the thyroid gland. Although, many people, including doctors, believe that the function of iodine is simply to be used by the thyroid gland to produce hormones, and that iodine supplements are not needed because the body needs such a small amount of iodine. Iodine is present in all our body’s organs and tissues. A diet containing sufficient amounts of iodine is necessary to support and maintain whole body iodine sufficiency.

According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), there are around 27 million people in the USA with thyroid disorders. That is a significant proportion of the population. The AACE asserts that as much as half of the cases of thyroid disease are not diagnosed. This is due to the vagueness of the symptoms and the fact that thyroid disease is often an underlying factor that promotes various other secondary disorders.

Thyroid disease is increasing, and it is believed to be the result of insufficient consumption of iodine, together with increased exposure and consumption of chloride, fluoride and bromide which are also from the same family of halogens as iodine. If you read my above article you will learn more of what this means and begin to understand why iodine supplements may be helpful.

Iodine Supplements May Support Your Health in Many Ways

Iodine is essential to our proper health and functioning, which includes the following important areas:

  • Bones
  • Brain
  • Breasts
  • Eyes
  • Gastrointestinal System
  • Gonads
  • Heart
  • Hormones
  • Immune System
  • Lungs
  • Mouth
  • Ovaries
  • Skin
  • Thyroid
  • Uterus

It is known that the thyroid gland and many other tissues in our body need much more iodine than the recommended daily allowance of around 0.125mg. The thyroid gland requires 3-6 mgs per day. Breast tissue requires 5 mg per day. Other tissues in the body require an additional 2mg per day. That is a daily requirement of 10-13 mg per day. Iodine is required in all the glands of our endocrine system. That amount of iodine is very difficult to obtain through our natural diet, and therefore iodine supplements may need to be considered.

According to Dr. Abraham, one of the leading researchers of iodine, some other roles of iodine in our body include prevention of abnormal heart rhythms, mood regulation, cancer prevention, blood pressure regulation, prevention and treatment of fibrocystic breast disease, regulation of blood sugar, and prevention and treatment of diabetes. Iodine also enhances our immune system function and has valuable antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic properties. Obtaining sufficient iodine through normal diet and without the use of iodine supplements is indeed questionable.

Molecular iodine is absorbed by the body in a different way to iodide. So both forms are important for our health. Dr. Abraham’s research indicates that the thyroid gland favors iodide, and other organs, such as the ovaries and breast, favor iodine in its elemental form. Both iodine and iodide are in the formula for Iodoral and also in the Lugol’s solution of iodine supplements, in the proportions that he recommends.

Here are some excellent books I recommend on the importance of iodine to our overall health, and consideration for adding iodine supplements to your diet.

Iodine Supplements and Cancer

Are iodine supplements necessary? Studies have linked insufficient iodine levels to not only thyroid disease, but a host of other diseases including fibromyalgia, and breast, prostate and other cancers. With the diminishing nutritional quality of our food supply, and toxins and pollutants we are exposed to daily, it may well be that to get sufficient levels of iodine in our body requires iodine supplements.

At a 2010 medical conference known as A4M, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (a non-profit, medical organization representing 24,000 physicians and scientists from 110 countries worldwide), Dr. Jorge D. Flechas, MD delivered a paper on iodine insufficiency and cancer. Dr. Flechas is regarded as one of the contemporary experts on the subject of iodine. In his presentation he made it very clear that the absence of iodine in the body is a promoter of cancer. Therefore the addition of iodine supplements may be a useful preventative to serious health problems.

Insufficient iodine in the breast produces fibrocystic breast disease which is a precursor to developing breast cancer later in life. In the developing fetus the first place that iodine is present is in the lining of the stomach. Lack of iodine in the stomach can lead to problems with acid production. Lack of iodine can also lead to esophageal cancer and ovarian cancer. In the uterus, lack of iodine to the endometrium can produce endometriosis which in turn can lead to endometrial cancer.

Women have considerably more prevalence of thyroid disease than men. This is due to higher estrogen levels in women. The estrogen inhibits the body’s ability to absorb iodine.

In the last 30 years, due to changes in our food habits and nutrition, we have reduced the amount of iodine in our cells by up to 50%. Iodine is no longer present in our salt, bread or milk, and today many people are radically reducing their salt intake. The result is that for many people their iodine level has become insufficient to support their health and prevent the development of disease. Iodine supplements may become an essential part of our diet in order to protect our health.

To make it even worse our society is now using more bromide (in baked goods), chloride (in water and flame retardants) and fluoride (in water, toothpaste, and dental treatments) than ever before. These are known as halogens. Iodine is also a halogen. All of these halogens compete in the body to be taken up by the same receptor cells for halogens. So if our iodine level is low, our body’s iodine receptors actually take up these other halogens which can cause toxin related diseases. Therefore the increased presence of these other three halogens is in turn contributing to the deficiency of iodine throughout the body. Add to that the increasing lack of iodine in our soils and you can now understand why it has become a real issue, and why considering the use of iodine supplements is a sensible option.

We know that estrogen-dominance from exposure to various chemicals (xenoestrogens) is also becoming a problem for many people and can increase the risk of cancer. It has been shown that iodine can prevent the risk of cancer because it decreases the responsiveness of our genes to cancer, and promotes apoptosis (the natural death of cancer cells). In addition iodine has been found to influence the proportions of the estrogens (estriol, estrone and estrodiol) such that the cancer preventing estrogen (estriol) outweighs the other more harmful estrogens.

One of the best iodine supplements I have found is Iodoral. I have been supplementing my diet daily with Iodoral iodine supplements for quite a long time.

Here are some books I recommend which will give you an understanding of the important role of iodine in cancer prevention and treatment. Updating your knowledge on the subject of iodine will enable you to make your own decision whether iodine supplements may be beneficial for you and your family.

“Breast Cancer and Iodine : How to Prevent and How to Survive Breast Cancer” by Dr. David Derry
This book by Dr. Derry makes a convincing case for iodine for both a prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The likely anti-cancer action of iodine is due to its influence in apoptosis which is the death of cells. This is a key aspect of cancer and its treatment.
The book makes a very convincing link between insufficient levels of iodine and its influence on fibrocystic breast disease and cancer. It is a useful addition to help you understand the value of iodine supplements in maintaining health. Read more…

Iodoral Iodine Supplements

Many people will be wondering if taking iodine supplements is actually necessary. A recent study of more than 700 teenage females in the UK revealed that almost 70% of them had an iodine deficiency. One of the global priorities of the World Health Organization is in fact iodine-deficiency, as it is now recognized as a major worldwide problem. Iodine supplements are rapidly getting considerable attention amongst health professionals. The concept of supplementation with iodine supplements is gaining favor amongst many people.

The consumption of iodine in the U.S.A per person is around 100 times less than that consumed by Japanese people. Over the past 40-50 years most of the western countries have changed their policies towards iodine and no longer is iodine present in bread or salt. This makes a stronger case for considering the use of iodine supplements today.

Iodine is an essential trace element required by our bodies to produce hormones from the thyroid gland. Many people (including doctors) do not realize that the female ovaries also have the ability to make thyroid hormone. Iodine is not manufactured by the body and needs to be part of our daily diet so that adequate levels are maintained. If we are unable to consume sufficient iodine through normal diet then perhaps we should seriously consider iodine supplements.

The optimum amount of iodine required by the whole body to maintain health has not really ever been studied and is unknown. The current recommended daily allowance for iodine is simply based on the amount of iodine/iodide needed to prevent diseases known to be caused by an iodine deficiency, such as diseases of the thyroid gland and some growth and development diseases. It should not be assumed that the amount of iodine to stop a deficiency-disease is the same as that required to maintain a healthy state of the whole body.

It is known that iodine plays an important role throughout the entire body and cellular system. In fact there is increasing evidence from scientific studies that insufficient iodine is a major contributing factor in breast disease and cancer. Some health professionals consider that iodine supplements may play an important role in health maintenance and cancer prevention.

It is perhaps unlikely there will be any studies undertaken to determine the optimum healthy level of iodine, and whether iodine supplements are necessary. The main reason being there is no profit for the drug companies or those with vested economic interests to ‘discover’ the importance of iodine (a naturally occurring element of nature) in disease prevention. However there are some doctors doing there own scientific and clinical research who are coming up with very interesting results that can benefit those of us who are interested in disease prevention and maintaining our own health. Most notably these include Drs Abraham, Bernstein, and Flechas.

Based purely on demographic analyses, the mainland Japanese people consume as part of their normal diet an average of 13.8 mg of iodine daily, and they would seem to be among the healthiest people in the world. In consideration of this and all of the research I have read about iodine, I personally supplement my diet with Iodoral iodine supplements on a daily basis.

Of all the iodine supplements available, Iodoral was the product of choice for me for the following main reasons:

  • dosage enables both therapeutic level of usage and ongoing maintenance usage as required. Most other iodine supplements contain only a very small dosage of iodine.
  • contains both iodine and iodide (as potassium iodide) in what I feel are the optimum proportions beneficial for the body. Most other iodine supplements do not contain both these essential forms.
  • Iodoral iodine supplements are in tablet form rather than liquid form
  • the iodine supplement formula and product is designed by a medical practitioner renowned for his knowledge of iodine, his research and his clinical findings on the subject of iodine in sufficient levels to maintain health
